Four Days in Slovenia – Fog, Light and Photographic Adventures
Four days may not sound like much. But on a successful photography trip, that is enough time to experience so many different landscapes, lights and moods that even after returning home, it takes days to mentally walk through it all again.
Our trip to Slovenia with the Pannon Photography Circle was exactly like that.
Sunshine, fog, mountains, churches, forests, waterfalls, rain – and of course a lot of photography. The weather changed almost constantly, which might be frustrating as a tourist, but as a photographer it is hard to ask for anything better. A landscape shows one face in sunshine, another in rain, and an entirely different world appears when the morning fog begins to hide the hills.
When fog is not an obstacle, but the main character
One of the strongest experiences of the trip for me was the area around Sveti Tomaž.
The church standing on the hilltop is a beautiful subject in itself, but that morning we were given much more than just a landscape. The fog kept moving between the hills, at times almost completely swallowing the church and the trees, then opening up the scenery again for a few minutes.
Sometimes only the church tower and a few trees emerged from the white. At other moments, the distant mountain ridges appeared above the sea of fog, and then the warm light of the rising sun began to illuminate the autumn hillsides.
In the very same place, images with completely different moods could be made only a few minutes apart.
That is exactly why I love situations like this. What happens is not necessarily what you imagined in advance. You have to watch, wait, and when the layers, lights and forms come together for a few moments, press the shutter.
Mountains, water and constantly changing light
Slovenia packs an astonishing variety of landscapes into a small area.
One moment we are among mountains, then in a forest, beside a stream or standing in front of a waterfall. The next day, a church becomes a small but defining point in the landscape.
We had sunshine and we had rain. From a photographic point of view, both gave us something.
Strong light brought out the autumn colours and the layers of the mountains. Overcast weather produced softer tones. After the rain, the colours of the vegetation and rocks became more saturated, while at the waterfalls there was an entirely different rhythm and movement to look for than in a quiet mountain panorama.
We were not searching for one specific image. Instead, we let the locations and the weather provide the subjects.
A photography trip is not only about the photographs
A journey like this is, of course, about much more than those few seconds when we press the shutter button.
The drives between locations, shared mornings, evening conversations, looking at each other's images and seeing how everyone views the same landscape a little differently are just as important.
For me, this is also one of the great values of the Pannon Photography Circle.
In a good photography community, the aim is not for everyone to create the same image. Quite the opposite: it is fascinating to see what each person notices in the same place, which detail they highlight, what light they wait for, or how they compose the same subject in a completely different way.
And of course, there is the good company as well.
After four intense days, we returned home not only with many photographs, but also with a great collection of shared experiences.
When a journey becomes a series
After a photography trip, it always takes time for the images that will remain important in the long term to begin separating themselves from the many photographs made along the way.
Some of the first selections have now also become part of the Slovenia collection in the webshop.
The misty morning around Sveti Tomaž in particular produced several images that show the same place yet carry very different moods. In some, the church and the hill become the main focus; in others, they almost disappear into the fog; and in a wider view, the church is only a tiny point of reference between the mountains and the sea of mist.
Perhaps that also sums up these four days best.
We did not bring home one single “great image” from Slovenia, but many small moments: light in the fog, water between rocks, trees in the rain, mountains in the distance and plenty of good memories.
And the collection will certainly continue to grow.
